                                                   Exploratory Essay

 

                    Police Brutality is the excessive form of brutality that police officers use against people for an unfair reason. Police Brutality is targeted against black people a majority of the time. White police officers are known for using unfair excessive violence against blacks because they maintain the ideology that blacks are likely to commit crimes. Therefore, the justified reason that white officers feel that they have for committing this act of police brutality is that they fear the actions of black people. Racism is also tied into this belief and often drives it in society. “Police Brutality through the Eyes of the Brutalized”  by author Dwight Brown is a popular article that has an opinionated piece about the discussion of police brutality against blacks. The New York Times contains a scholarly article called “Amber Guyger Is Sentenced to 10 Years for Murder of Botham Jean” by authors Marina Trahan Martinez, Sarah Mervosh and John Eligon. This article refers to information about a recent racial event that occurred with someone and their neighbor. “Navigating Genres” is an article by Kerry Dirk in which Dirk give his interpretation of the word “Genre” and tries to represent the word through the use of many examples. “Identifying a conversation” is an article by Jason Carabelli which identifies the ways in which people could identify how people talk to each other and the conversation they have. The intended audience who reads the scholarly article will see the article as a source that’s worth ready because its very appealing to the audience. 

             When exploring many different research sources, a person could compare these sources by comparing their differences in how the pages look, the structure of the page, length and purpose. These differences are common in many sources such as newspapers and scholarly articles. The New York Times is a newspaper source that has many popular articles linked to many topics around the world. In the New York Times, there is an article about a former female police officer named Amber Guyger, who shot her neighbor, Botheam Jean. This article is based on what was occurring in the courtroom for the trial.The reader of this article could see that the genre that the article is in the form of a Newspaper. Clearly, there is a report about an incident in which people could read and learn about they explore the article. In the article, there are quotations of what people are saying in the courtroom. The authors speak to the audience as if the author is reporting to the audience. The authors report the details of the incident in order to make the article informational.The audience in the reading could be anyone who knows about police brutality and have prior knowledge of racism in America. Since the shooting by Amber Guyger on Botheam Jean was a racially motivated shooting, people see the issue to be related to police brutality.The audience may see this source to be recognizable because  it includes a topic that is relevant in society and could cause a big discussion.

                  “Identifying a Conversation”, created by Jason Carabelli, is an article that informs people of the way that they converse with each other through writing. Jason Carabelli mentions that the conversations that people in writing can create perspectives that affect how the topic may be seen in people’s eyes. The article from the New York Times regarding the story of Amber Guyger includes many of the concepts form Carabelli’s article. In the New York Times article, the authors creates a source leading to a conversation in which they talk to the reader about the recent events that had happened. The general public is open to see this source, so they may based off their many arguments on the source. The story that was included regarding the topic of police brutality in the New York Time is a source that could create many viewpoints and could circulate people’s opinions when they read the source. 

                        “Police Brutality through the Eyes of the Brutalized” is a popular article by Dwight Brown that involves Brown asserting his view about police brutality that occurs against black people. This source is a source that is more for a popular audience because Brown uses his own story and opinion to grab the attention of readers. Brown talks about his encounter with police and the fact he arrested unfairly. He claimed that he was unjustly arrested just because he was shooting a BB gun at birds. It was mistaken for a real gun. He suggested that he was arrested aggressively when he said that “my head hit the door when they threw me in the back seat.” Through the story that Brown told in the scholarly article, Brown has aimed to make the reader sympathize with Brown’s experience. Brown expects his audience to realize that Police brutality is a common racial issue that is prevalent in society and has an effect on people.

                           “Navigating Genres” is an article by Kerry Dirk in which she explains the importance of genres how readers could understand them. Kerry refers to many topics and categories that fits into genres. This ties into the journal source regarding  Dwight Brown because he actually refers to certain genre when trying to appeal to his audience. Brown’s journal ties into the genre of police brutality since police brutality is referred to as a topic. This topic that was introduced by Brown served as purpose of trying to address a target audience. Using this genre can make connections to the reader and the audience.

                    All in All, scholarly articles are articles that give reliable information to the public. Popular articles are articles that are represented as  journals or opinion pieces. There are many popular and scholarly articles that represent many topics. There are many topics that can be represented such as police brutality. Based off the New York Times article, the reader can look at the source and acknowledge it to be a scholarly article because it reports reliable information to the general public. The reader can acknowledge the Brown article to be a popular article because the reader can articulate information like its a journal.
